MTA – Long Island Rail Road
LIRR West Side Storage Yard (Hudson Yards)
Key Business Needs
To eliminate a “bottleneck” in the East River tunnels and Penn Station that severely limited train throughput. Morning rush hour trains to Penn Station had to discharge passengers and then return to Long Island for lack of a storage facility in Manhattan.
Solutions Offered
NexLyte, Inc. – Telecom Engineering Consultants designed and oversaw the construction of LIRR’s first fiber optic system between the Yard and Penn Station. The design eliminated the “critical path” construction of hundreds of pairs of copper cables.
Key Business Benefits
An on-schedule opening of the yard was facilitated by the fiber optic system through elimination of the labor-intensive copper cable construction critical path. The yard is now covered and has become the foundation for the new Hudson Yards mega complex of retail, office and residential buildings.
